Professor Sarah Bridle
(Project Lead) University of York Sarah is Chair of Food, Climate and Society at the University of York. Motivated by the need to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, Sarah leads the AFN Network+ and is Co-Lead of FixOurFood. Sarah is also the author of Food and Climate Change -- Without the Hot Air. Dr Ximena Schmidt (Coordinator)
Brunel University London Ximena is a Senior Lecturer in Chemical Engineering, working on sustainable food and energy systems. She specializes in assessing sustainability aspects of different food products, their supply chains and consumption patterns, using life cycle assessment methodologies to understand the environmental, economic and social impacts. Her research has also extended to food-waste valorisation technologies and circular economy. Katherine Jones
Cranfield University Kate began her career as a teacher before going on to work in education for sustainability, including at the Fairtrade Foundation and Marine Stewardship Council. She has 20 years experience managing major projects to create educational and awareness raising campaigns. She is currently studying for a PhD at Cranfield, focusing on the role of early warning systems in cushioning the impacts of environmental disruptors on the UK food supply chain. University of Leeds Jason is Head of the School of Psychology, University of Leeds, the President Elect of the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO), a lead investigator on the SWEET and SWITCH research programmes, an investigator on iKnowFood and theme lead on Behaviour, Health and Consumption for N8 Agrifood. Beckie Lait
University of York Beckie is doing a PhD with FixOurFood at the University of York, researching the role of power dynamics in meat and livestock systems in shaping perceptions of meat and livestock reduction. She also has a wealth of experience leading climate change science engagement projects. Dr Emma Nichols
University of Manchester Emma is the public engagement manager in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Manchester, connecting physics staff and students with schools, families and the public. She’s looking at how this work can incorporate sustainability themes. Dr Laurence Stamford
University of Manchester Laurence is a Lecturer in Sustainable Chemical Engineering at The University of Manchester. He specialises in the assessment of the environmental, social and economic impacts across the entire life cycle of new technologies and products. This includes work in the food, renewables, fossil fuels, chemicals and nuclear sectors. |
Alison Fletcher (Coordinator)
University of York Alison project manages the AFN Network+. Her primary role is to help increase membership and develop relationships between collaborators. This involves encouraging new research partnerships, developing funding applications and uniting different communities in their research goals across the agri-food research sector. Dr Christian Reynolds
(Coordinator) City University/ University of Sheffield/ University of South Australia Christian is Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Food Policy, City University, London; and an adjunct Research Fellow at the Institute for Sustainable Food, University of Sheffield, and at the Barbara Hardy Institute for Sustainable Environments and Technologies, University of South Australia. Christian researches the economic and environmental impacts of food loss and waste, and the how to shift towards sustainable diets and cookery. Professor John Mclaughlin
University of Manchester John is Professor of Gastroenterology and Nutrition at the University of Manchester, and a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Salford Royal Hospitals. His research focusses on diet in health and disease, and nutritional status in older adults. He is also interested in climate issues related to diet and health. John is also the research trustee for the charity Guts UK. Professor Pete Smith
University of Aberdeen Pete is Professor of Soils and Global Change at the Institute of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Aberdeen and Science Director of the Scottish Climate Change Centre of Expertise (ClimateXChange). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, the Indian National Science Academy, the Institute of Soil Scientists, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the European Academy of Sciences, and the Royal Society (London). Dr Angelina Frankowska
Cranfield University Angelina is a research fellow at the School of Water, Energy and Environment at Cranfield University where she focuses on regenerative agricultural practices and the implementation of these into a farm model. Her expertise is in life cycle analysis and the environmental impacts of food production and consumption. Her research interests also include the food-energy-water nexus and sustainable diets. Lucy Yates
University of Oxford Lucy is the Public Engagement Manager for LEAP, a Wellcome funded science research project at the University of Oxford to investigate the impact of the meat and dairy industries on the environment and human health. She has fourteen years’ experience working in museums and universities. Dr Carla Adriano Martins
Federal University of Rio de Janeiro Carla is a nutritionist with a Ph.D. in Sciences/Public Health Nutrition. She researches culinary practices as a tool to promote healthy and sustainable eating/food systems. Carla was a Global Challenge researcher fellow at the University of Manchester and a researcher at the Center for Epidemiological Research in Nutrition and Public Health/University of São Paulo. |
Dr Alana Kluczkovski (Coordinator)
University of York Alana is a Research Associate in the Biology Department, University of York. Alana is a food system’s researcher, working on urban farming and sustainable diets. She runs a community vertical farm, engages with the public and local businesses helping them to understand how we can change the food system in an equitable, healthy and sustainable way. Part of her work is to create educational resources to guide public and policy makers about food choices to improve human and environmental health. Professor Katherine Denby
University of York Katherine works to enhance disease resistance and reduce crop waste in leafy vegetables. She combines genomics, transcriptomics, systems biology and synthetic biology with quantitative genetics and genetic diversity resources. Katherine is a Professor in the Biology Department at the University of York. Jacqueline Silva
University of Edinburgh Jacqueline is a nutritionist, working with clinical and dietary data since 2011. She was awarded a Chevening Scholarship to study Health Data Science at the University of Manchester. She is now at the University of Edinburgh working to evaluate sustainable dietary transitions in Brazil. Professor Rosie Green
London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Rosie is a Professor in sustainability, nutrition and health. Her research focuses on the links between diets, the environment and human health. She is also a member of the management committees for the LSHTM Centre on Climate Change and Planetary Health and the Leverhulme Centre for Integrative Research on Agriculture and Health. University of Bath Flora is responsible for supporting the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) to deliver the university wide research strategy at the University of Bath. She previously managed the UKRI Transforming UK Food Systems Programme aiming to transform the UK food system for healthy people and a healthy environment. Dr Claire Hoolohan
University of Manchester Claire is a Presidential Fellow at the University of Manchester. Her research examines society’s relationships with water, energy and food to understand pathways towards a sustainable future. Dr Belinda Morris
University of York Belinda is Operations Director of FixOurFood, a research programme at the University of York, which aims to transform the Yorkshire food system to one that is regenerative. Her interests lie primarily in maths and science. She built her experience in financial and project management whilst leading the Interpretation and Exhibition teams at the National Railway Museum. Prior to that she worked as a science communicator – designing and delivering community science events around the Yorkshire region. |
Our research and public engagement activities have been funded through multiple research grants and with the help of a wide group of people, we are extremely grateful for support as follows:
